There are a lot of professional gamblers outthere, but Bill Benter is one of the most famous.
The American, who also donates to various goodcauses, made much of his fortune through the development of analytical computersoftware programs.
Genius x10
Benter, who is married to Vivian Fung, is oneof the great success stories. But how did he do it?
Early life
Benter was born in 1957 in Pittsburgh,Pennsylvania, and he still lives there with his family.
He is well-travelled, though, having lived inHong Kong for a time, while he also drove across Russia and hitchhiked acrossEurope in his youth.
After studying physics at university, Benterused his high level of mathematics ability to count cards at casinos in LasVegas, Nevada.
Though he made a lot of money, having beeninspired by Edward O. Thorp’s book Beat the Dealer, it didnot take long for all the casinos on the Vegas strip to ban him for cheating.
Occupation
Benter’s life changed when he met a fellowgambler named Alan Woods, with the pair deciding to go into business together. While Benter was the expert in computers and analysis, Woods was a horse racingexpert.
The pair relocated to Hong Kong – one of thebiggest gambling markets in the world – and they began working on formulas thatcould be used to predict the winners of horse races.
Woods and Benter began their business withjust $150,000 but after they sustained some initial losses, that cash soon grewas they learned how to make regular successful race predictions through theirformulas. Their partnership broke down when Woods demanded a larger share.
Benter went on to work with Robert Moore onhis analytical computer software programs as he continued to build his fortuneas one of the most successful gamblers in America’s history.
It has been claimed that at the peak of hispowers, Benter was able to make as much as $10 million in profit from bettingon horse races every single day.
Bill Benter is the richest but othershave also made a fortune from gambling, with many turning the pastime intotheir professional livelihoods.
Not that Benter has completely turned awayfrom gambling, but the multi-millionaire is now known just as much for hisphilanthropy and charitable donations as he is for betting on horses.
Career highlights
Benter and working partner Paul Coladonatolanded a gigantic jackpot when betting on a single bet that was called theTriple Trio.
The bet – which involved predicting the topthree finishers in three different horse races in any order – had a growingjackpot as it had not been won for some time.
Benter and Coladonato were among the estimatedmillion people to have a bet on the jackpot. In fact, the algorithm they haddeveloped recommended placing some 51,381 wagers in total.
Naturally, almost all of these bets were lostbut it only took one of them to be a winner for Benter and Coladonato toimmediately become millionaires. They landed the $16 million jackpot.
However, even more remarkably, they decided not to claim their bounty as they didnot feel it would be fair to the other gamblers for them to do so.
Benter did this again in November 2001,betting on the Triple Trio with stakes of HK$1.6 million placed on more than5,000 combinations of wagers.
He won the $118 million Triple Trio but againopted to leave the winnings unclaimed, which meant they would be given tocharitable causes.
While many would horde the knowledge theyamassed to beat the bookmakers, Benter was determined to share the wealth.
Computer-Based Horse Race Handicapping andWagering Systems: A Report was the name of an academic paper he published, while he also gave talks on mathematics to university students.
The online betting industry is now said to beworth $60 billion and visionaries such as Benter have no doubt played a keyrole in its growth.
